About the Role

The position will rotate through various departments throughout the company, allowing for hands-on experience in areas of Production, Vineyard and Hospitality. The rotation is approximate, but From September 1st to April 30th, the bulk of activities will be in the Production Department. From May through August the primary activities will be in the Vineyard. Hospitality will be intermittent throughout the year and the harvest will be split among Production and Vineyard.

The apprentice will support each department with different tasks and duties, but, above all else, will be expected to remain flexible, hard-working and eager to learn. The apprentice will leave with a greater understanding of the operational aspect of both the vineyard and the winery. This opportunity is meant to be a holistic experience for an individual who is committed to growing a career in the wine industry and is looking to contribute their skills, passion and talent to the high-quality wines and experiences crafted within Wolffer Estate Vineyard.

  COMPENSATION

Free Housing during term
+$16/hr

WINEGROWING

· Learn which grapes we grow, become familiar with our lot map
· Learn some info about each grape
· Learn about sustainability in the vineyard
· Participate in de-leafing
· Assist in harvesting grapes
· Exposure to the determination of when the grape is ready to be harvested

 
HOSPITALITY

· Work in both our Tasting Room and Winestand
·  Work in kitchen
·  Bus tables
·  Potentially serve at the Winestand
· Wineclub fulfillment (quarterly)
· Potential boutique retail sales

PRODUCTION

· Become familiar with all aspects of winemaking operations
· Perform all aspects of cellar work, including but not limited to racking, pumping, punchovers/punchdowns, topping and blending of wine
· Operates and maintains cellar and crush equipment
· Cleans and sanitizes all cellar equipment; maintains knowledge and safety of wine pumps, presses, and fruit processing equipment
· Assists where required during busy crush season; works long hours as required at harvest with long hours on your feet and lifting, walking, standing, etc, as needed
· Assist in the bottling operation
· Wine tasting education
· Potential Forklift Operation

 QUALIFICATIONS

· Curiosity and a passion for learning a must
· Must be at least 21 years of age
· Posses a valid driver’s license upon start date
· Physical requirements
· Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs
· At certain points the position is exposed to outdoor elements, daytime temperatures can range from freezing to hot
